What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain shells designed to be cemented over teeth to conceal flaws like gaps, chips, cracks, stains, and misshapenness. Porcelain is a pearlescent material that mimics the ideal appearance of natural tooth structure, and it is nonporous, which makes it incredibly resistant to stains. These appliances require the same oral hygiene methods as natural tooth structures to stay in great shape, and they can last for up to fifteen years before needing replacement if they receive excellent care.

The Process of Getting Porcelain Veneers

The first step to getting veneers is a consultation at our office so one of our dentists can evaluate your oral health and determine the best way to address your needs. If you are approved for the treatment, you will be scheduled for an initial appointment, during which our dentist will numb your mouth before removing a small amount of enamel to make room and placing a set of temporary veneers. After your permanent set is carefully crafted at a trusted dental lab, you’ll come back to our office about two weeks later to receive your porcelain veneers. After any adjustments, you’ll be ready to show your new smile off to the world.

Understanding the Cost of Porcelain Veneers

While most dental insurance policies don’t cover cosmetic treatments such as porcelain veneers, we offer options that can make the procedure more affordable. We partner with CareCredit, a trusted third-party lender, to provide our patients with flexible financing plans that can break their bills into small monthly payments that are easy to manage. We’ll be happy to help you navigate your financing and payment options during your consultation.

Veneers FAQs

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

Technically, you’ll receive two different sets of veneers over the course of your treatment: a set of temporary veneers, and a set of permanent veneers.

It takes about one to two weeks for our partners over at the dental lab to fully customize your dental cosmetics. In the meantime, we don’t want your teeth to go unprotected, so we’ll apply temporary veneers to your smile. These typically aren’t as durable as their permanent counterparts; we recommend you avoid overly hard, crunchy, and chewy foods until we can make the swap.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

Rest assured, your veneers will be specifically designed and precisely placed to fit as comfortably and aesthetically as possible. That said, the way your tongue presses against your teeth can affect certain sounds, such as “s,” “v,” “th,” and “z.” Some patients find they have trouble enunciating clearly until they get more used to the new shape of their pearly whites.

All that is to say that any lisp you develop after getting veneers in Powdersville should be temporary. But if difficulties persist, give us a call so we can double-check the fit of your dental cosmetics.

Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?

Technically, dental veneers cannot physically change the position of your teeth or jaw. If you have a severe overbite, underbite, crossbite, or other such issues, you’ll likely benefit more from orthodontics.

However, dental veneers can make your smile appear more even. If your concerns are more cosmetic than practical, veneers can be an effective way to conceal minor misalignment. Ask our team about your bite during your consultation, and we’ll be able to let you know which option is best for you!

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

It depends on what you have in mind for your smile aesthetics. Ultimately, the goal of a veneer treatment is to cosmetically enhance your visible teeth so that your dental line-up looks even and consistent. Sometimes patients only need one veneer in order to accomplish this, while others need as many as 12. During your consultation, our team will take a closer look at your teeth and let you know how many veneers your unique grin will need.

How are Veneers Different Than Crowns?

Dental veneers are adhered only to the front-facing portion of your teeth. They have about the same thickness as a contact lens, and are typically considered to be nonessential cosmetics by dental insurance companies – though they can be used to protect minor enamel cracks and mitigate sensitivity.

Crowns provide complete coverage, and are slightly thicker than veneers. While they can be tooth-colored and look incredibly natural, they’re more commonly used as dental restorations. Crowns are better able to protect and support teeth affected by severe damage or decay.

Basically, if you want to conceal dental imperfections, you’ll most likely want veneers. But if your tooth’s health and wellness is at risk, you’ll probably need a crown.
