What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over your existing teeth to change the appearance of their shape, size, color, and spacing. These durable, natural-looking enhancements can be used to eat a full diet, and with proper care and use can last for 20+ years.
Veneers can be made of ceramic or porcelain, but porcelain is what we most commonly recommend thanks to its durability and natural appearance.
In addition to improving the look of your smile, veneers are also stain resistant, meaning you won’t have to give up red wine or your daily cup of coffee to enjoy their benefits!
The Process of Getting Veneers

Your veneers’ treatment begins with a consultation with your dentist at Tylan Creek Family Dentistry. During this appointment, we will discuss your goals, and what you presently do and don’t like about your smile. If it is determined that you are a good candidate for veneers, you’ll be scheduled for the next step. At this appointment, your dentist will prepare your teeth for treatment by removing a small amount of enamel from each tooth. Impressions will then be made of your teeth and will then be sent to a dental laboratory for your veneers to be individually crafted for your teeth. Once your veneers are delivered to us, we will schedule you to return to have them placed, and you’ll be ready to show off your beautiful smile to the world!
Benefits of Veneers

Veneers have myriad benefits, including stain resistance, the ability to correct multiple issues in one treatment, and the durability to last for many years with proper car and use. Though they can’t prevent cavities, your veneers can improve your oral health by closing gaps between teeth and even restoring the shape and size of damaged or malformed teeth.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers

The cost of your veneers depends on the material of the veneer, and of how many you need. While many people opt to get only six veneers per arch, you can get as many or as few as you’d like. Ten is ideal for making sure you can speak and smile without seeing color discrepancies in your mouth, but this also depends on your individual facial structure.
Veneers are considered an elective cosmetic treatment, and therefore most dental insurance will not cover them. On some rare occasions, they may be partially covered if they are placed on a tooth that is broken. To help make the cost of your treatment more affordable, we are proud to accept third-party financing from CareCredit. These plans allow you to break the cost of your veneers treatment into flexible, low-to-no interest monthly payments. Veneers FAQs
Are Veneers Permanent?
If you’re curious whether veneers are intended to be removable restorations, like dentures, you’re not alone! It’s natural to questions whether these porcelain shells are meant to be frequently taken out then reinserted, but that’s not the case. Once they’re cemented over the fronts of your enamel, they should remain firmly in place.
With that said, placing these covers involves making an irreversible change to the structure of your teeth. Our team must remove a small amount of enamel for them to fit correctly, which doesn’t regenerate. Thankfully, veneers are usually strong enough to safeguard your smile from potential harm.
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
Many patients worry that investing in cosmetic dentistry means they’re sacrificing their oral health to improve their appearance, but nothing could be further from the truth! Although we’re more than happy to upgrade your grin with veneers, your dental well-being is our primary concern.
That’s why we’ll examine your mouth and treat any existing cavities or gum disease before proceeding. Then, you must continue to brush and floss twice daily to remove plaque and bacteria to prevent additional issues from developing. Your prosthetics won’t decay, but the underlying teeth can be damaged if you don’t clean your mouth consistently.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Veneers are known for being incredibly resilient, but it’s normal to wonder exactly how long you can anticipate enjoying their many benefits. According to previous research, like a 2007 study by Layton, 96% of these restorations lasted 5 years, 93% lasted 10 to 11, and 73% lasted 15 to 16 years. More recent studies indicate that up to 83% of these shells last about 20 years.
Generally speaking, you can preserve your cosmetics by maintaining them regularly. In addition to a twice-daily at-home dental hygiene routine, you should also visit our team every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning. This allows us to monitor your condition to catch and treat any areas of concern, like decay or damage to the teeth below your veneers, before they progress.
Do Veneers Give You A Lisp?
Although veneers are incredibly thin (about 0.2 to 0.5 mm), it can take your tongue and the other supporting tissues in your mouth a few weeks to adjust to their presence. During this time, you might notice a slight lisp when pronouncing certain sounds, such as “s”, “v”, or “th”.
Thankfully, this is usually temporary and resolves with time and patience as your mouth acclimates to your restorations. If you have a lisp that persists or doesn’t subside, contact us and let us know. We may be able to thin your veneer slightly to reduce its impact.
