What Should You Do If Your Veneer Falls Off?

A man worried over how his veneer fell off

Among other things, dental veneers are known for their durability. Not only do they stick to teeth with special cement, but they’re also resistant to daily wear and tear. That said, they can fall out of your mouth in some cases. If your own veneer fell off, though, don’t worry too much. Your dentist has the power to solve the matter! As for what to do in the meantime, your local practice has you covered. Here are four steps you should take to manage a fallen veneer.

If You Can, Find and Collect the Pieces

First things first: you should try and find the detached veneer. If it’s in good condition, your dentist may be able to reattach it to your tooth. They can even temporarily fix a broken veneer until you get a new one.

Once you’ve found the prosthetic (or its pieces), keep it (or them) in a hard, clean container. That way, you’ll know where the veneer is for your future dental visit.

Call an Emergency Dentist

After you’ve secured the fallen veneer, quickly call your emergency dentist. You should see them right away, as your affected tooth is now exposed. Away. Left untreated, it could suffer further damage.

During the call with the dentist, make sure to let them know about your situation. They can suggest how to keep your tooth safe before the appointment.

Be Careful of the Affected Area

While you wait for your dental visit, try not to disturb the affected tooth. It may not be in grave danger now, but external stimuli could still cause problems.

One thing to note is that the tooth will likely feel sensitive. Without the veneer to cover its surface, it’ll react more strongly to hot or cold foods and drinks. As such, use caution when eating or drinking.

Use a Temporary Solution

Unless directly told by your dentist, you shouldn’t try to reattach the veneer on your own. Doing so could damage the veneer’s porcelain or, even worse, the tooth itself.

Still, that doesn’t mean you have to leave the area unprotected. If you’re bothered by its sensitivity or roughness, you can apply dental wax as a temporary solution.

If your veneer fell off, don’t panic. As long as you follow these steps, your dentist will soon fix the issue.
